Memento mori

A Latin phrase used to remind humans of the inevitability of death. Since one of the major purposes of Christianity is to provide relief from the fear of death by promising salvation, the memento mori serves to emphasize the transitory nature of life and its pleasures and the importance of preparing for the everlasting afterlife. In art, a memento mori can be as overt as showing a dead corpse or skeleton in a funeral setting, or disguised as a vanitas motif such as a wilting flower, decomposing fruits, skulls, and hourglasses. The juxtaposition of old and young figures can also serve as a reminder of the transience of human existence.
